Limu coffee, an explosion of citrus sweetness from Ethiopia in roasting.
Limu coffee is a fine Ethiopian single-origin Arabica variety that is still little known in the world, despite its particular aromatic characteristics that mix sweet and citrus, acidic and spicy. It has a less celebrated reputation than the more renowned Jamaica Blue Mountain, Hawaii Kona and even its compatriot Sidamo, but compared to these, Ethiopian Limu coffee is truly an extraordinary tasting experience. This coffee grows not far from the capital Addis Ababa, a little further north than the Sidamo area; It grows best on the highlands between 1200 and 2000 meters. It is an Arabica, as the high altitude at which it is grown also tells us, and as for tasting characteristics we find it sweet, with a spicy note (like many Ethiopian coffees) and above all with a truly unique citrus note, which someone has defined “an explosion of citrus”
This bean is medium-sized, bright green in color (when not naturally toasted) and curiously round for an Arabica.
Limu coffee is grown in Limmu, a district that extends to the south of the Oromia region (Ethiopia).
The reason for its extraordinary taste, according to some, lies in its maturation in the "Tea Gardens", that is, in plantations where the coffee is grown together with banana plants, cinnamon and, of course, tea. This allows its beans to collect a great variety and aromatic complexity. According to some, the extraordinary aroma of this coffee depends instead on the density of its bean.
Nothing to do with the South American varieties, which Limu "beats" in lightness and delicacy, without sacrificing body and persistence. Also for the flavors that the bean incorporates as it grows and matures, all the warmth and suggestions of Africa in a cup.
